Ed Tech. Opens More Doors for Students with Virtual Office Hours, Virtual Workshops, and Interactive Videos

There are some exciting new developments coming in the Spring 2013 semester. I will be teaching a new course called English Writing with Multimedia, providing more virtual office hours so students can reach me without coming to the office, and offering students three virtual workshops to help them with their biggest writing and presentation challenges. The multimedia writing course has already been approved by my department, while the virtual office and virtual workshops are part of my own "pilot project," based on some promising research and successful trial-runs through some of last semester.

Furthermore, as the following "quiz video" demonstrates, it is now possible to engage student interest with online videos that are truly interactive. This is the first interactive "quiz video" that my students will see at the beginning of the Spring semester. It's almost 12 minutes long, but if you watch it and get immediate feedback about scoring 100% on the the quiz, I think you'll agree that the investment of 12 minutes of time is not a bad one.

Ed Tech. Provides Equal Opportunities

I have been teaching with technology since 1994, when our school district made it a top priority for my special education students to be included in the so-called "regular" classroom.

Witnessing how our technology could help young disabled learners to keep up with their "regular" classmates is what sparked my 19 years of using Educational Technology (Ed Tech) as much as possible. This direct, usually successful pedagogical approach has led to my passionate conviction that, if utilized correctly with student-centered objectives, Ed Tech helps make the acquisition of knowledge and opportunity more equitable for students of all backgrounds and abilities - and ultimately makes the world a much better place.

UBC Graduate School

Now that my life's journey has finally taken me to a place where I can (just) afford to study at graduate school, I am both proud and humbled that I was recently accepted into The University of British Columbia's online Master of Educational Technology (MET) program. As it says on my UBC application, this will allow me to help my HYU students and contribute to my department much more than ever before - and I can hardly wait to get started!

E-Portfolios

One of my UBC MET program requirements will be to curate an e-portfolio about Ed Tech. For reasons that are best explained in the excellent videos from Solent University and The University of Cumbria (on the right), I am getting started on that project now.
